Do NIHR health technology assessment randomised clinical trials perform as well as expected?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Results 125 clinical trials published in the HTA Journal Series met the inclusion. Five trials were reported to have been abandoned and were excluded from analyses. 72% of clinical trials achieved 50% or better of their original recruitment target. 90% of clinical trials recruited their targeted number of centres with 50% recruiting more than the initial number they expected. One third of trials amended the sample size calculation after the trial commenced with more than 80% decreasing the number of participants needed for the trial. Conclusions Reviewing the quality of performance of clinical trials will provide important feedback to research management centres about how realistic clinical trialists need to be about trial set up times and its impact on the time required to recruit participating centres.

Time to publication for NIHR HTA programme-funded studies
Objective Previous work has shown that 98% of NIHR Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Programme projects publish in Health Technology Assessment (the peer reviewed journal for the NIHR HTA Programme). 68% of clinical trials funded by the US NIH publish, with 46% publishing within 30 months of trial completion. This study aimed to assess the time-to-publication of HTA Programme primary research ...

BACKGROUND Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) are the gold standard assessment for health technologies. A key aspect of the design of any clinical trial is the target sample size. However, many publicly-funded trials fail to reach their target sample size. This study seeks to assess the current state of recruitment success and grant extensions in trials funded by the Health Technology Assessme...
متن کاملRecruitment and retention of participants in randomised controlled trials: a review of trials funded and published by the United Kingdom Health Technology Assessment Programme
BACKGROUND Substantial amounts of public funds are invested in health research worldwide. Publicly funded randomised controlled trials (RCTs) often recruit participants at a slower than anticipated rate. Many trials fail to reach their planned sample size within the envisaged trial timescale and trial funding envelope. OBJECTIVES To review the consent, recruitment and retention rates for sing...
